Sometimes they let me direct.
Go give Singaya some love, shooting and directing this was fun as hell. Keith, Dan, Jon and Brad are a great crew. Shooting this brought me back to being seventeen and shooting music videos for my friend's bands with my old Hi8 camera in high school. This song rules, great message. These guys knocked it out of the park.
We shot this guerilla style over two days. Day one was basketball, beer on the bridge, stealing the guy's beer, and the slow motion beer bath Keith takes in the end. Singaya nailed that opening shot passing the basketball on the first take. I followed them around the basketball court, originally we were going full court but I couldn't keep up with the action so we relegated it to half court. It was a fun day. I haven't been on a basket ball court in 22 years, I can't wait to do it again in another 22 years.
I have a very "Ed Wood" inspired ethic when it comes to shooting music videos. "Ok perfect we got it, lets move on" For the mugging, technically what's in the video was the dress rehearsal. They nailed that on the dress rehearsal. "Perfect, we got it, lets go to the next shot." "I thought that was a rehearsal." "It was but we got it." Props to Singaya for elevating that mugging as well, those guys added a lot of fun stuff to that... a knife, pushing the guy back into his seat, Keith slapping the beer out of his hand. ::chefs kiss:: Props to my friend Dee for driving my arthritic ass over there that day.
For the performance part, we brought all of our lights to a dark room and banged through the song 8 or 9 times at all different angles, and the static wide angle.
Technical mumbojumbo: 90% of this was shot on my new Canon M200 mirrorless camera at 1080P 60 FPS (frames per second) with the stock lens, except for the high wide angle performance shots that came from my T2i in 1080P at 30 FPS (24mm prime lens + a screw on wide angle lens.) I like how easy it is to get good footage these days. I didn't opt to shoot in 4K as I only get 24 FPS and I knew I wanted to do a lot of time stretching fuckery, I was shooting lots of motion, so 60 FPS it is.... Until the beer bath at the end, that was 120 FPS, and it's glorious. Same with Keith dunking the basketball. That wasn't CGI.
All in all, we're shooting another one March 31 in Teaneck NJ, come be a part of it. Find Singaya's linktree here. I don't have an answer as to when we drop the second video, besides "when it's done." Thanks for reading.
